There comes a time in every child's life, usually just
before they reach double-digits, when a certain amount
of innocence is stolen from them. The thief isn't necessarily
another person so much as it is the cruel hands of time,
experience, and acquired cynicism. When this occurs,
the world somehow seems colder, more painful, and less
a place where anything seems possible. This very time
is captured with stunning, beautiful simplicity in "The
Polar Express," a timeless motion picture so close
to perfection that, yes, it ranks alongside 1939's "The
Wizard of Oz" and 1971's "Willy Wonka and
the Chocolate Factory" as one of the very best
family films I have had the fortune of seeing. more..
Film Blather Review :
It occurs to me that the age group targeted
by The Polar Express -- roughly 7-11, if my instincts
don't fail me -- is just about at that time when children
are normally disabused of the notion that a large man
in a red suit delivers gifts via reindeer-pulled sleigh.
That can be a fairly traumatic realization, and what
these kids could use is a movie that helps them cope
with that, reconcile their idea of Christmas with the
magic it holds in reality. From that perspective, this
movie, which instructs them to believe no matter what
stupid, cynical adults may tell them, isn't really helping.
I would have loved to see a movie that nourishes their
skeptical drive and thirst for real knowledge rather
than encouraging blind faith despite ample evidence
to the contrary.

By now aren’t we all a little sick of watching
movies where kids try to decide whether or not they
believe in Santa Claus? I realize that there are only
so many things to explore if you want to make a family
movie about Christmas, so perhaps revisiting that theme
every couple of years is unavoidable, but still, come
on, give me something different. Last year Elf did something
unique and fresh with the whole Santa Claus thing and
in doing so created a great family comedy that’s
absolutely destined to become a holiday classic. This
year, The Polar Express takes its swings at entering
into the Christmas classic catalogue by throwing a bunch
of kids on a train and making them question whether
or not they should believe in Santa Claus, who for the
purposes of this film will be treated a lot like Jesus.
