Surrender to your most romantic fantasies, and allow
the dazzling spectacle of The Phantom of the Opera to
seduce you. Sumptuous visuals and Andrew Lloyd Webber's
dramatic, passionate music drives this story of obsession
and unrequited love between the disfigured musical genius
and the beautiful young ingénue. If you've seen
Lloyd Webber's stage musical, which is based on Gaston
Leroux's 1925 novel and that has been astounding audiences
since 1986, you will be invigorated by Joel Schumacher's
majestic film experience. If it is brand new to you,
its magic will overwhelm. Possibly Lloyd Webber's greatest
musical achievement, it is without doubt his most personal,
having been written for his then muse Sarah Brightman,
a vehicle that made her star shine very brightly. It
was only their divorce that slowed down the cogs of
the wheels that turned the stage show into a musical
on screen.

UK :
It's testament to the film's prolonged gestation
period that Emmy Rossum was only four years old when
a big screen adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's stage
musical was first proposed. Fourteen years ago Lloyd
Webber's then wife Sarah Brightman was originally scheduled
to play Christine Daae, the young soprano who becomes
the obsession of the Phantom. Before newcomer Rossum
was picked, the long list of actors considered for the
prestigious part included Keira Knightley, Anne Hathaway
and Charlotte Church. More..

It’s 1870 and the focal point of this story is
a French Opera house. All of the performances center
around the temperamental Diva, Carlotta (Minnie Driver).
She throws temper tantrum after temper tantrum until
she gets her way. Everyone bends over backwards to please
even though her voice is sub-par because she is all
that they have. New patrons come on to the scene and
with advice from the last Patron, they give into her.
They don’t follow all of his advice or that of
Madam Giry (Miranda Richardson). Madame is the choreographer
and chaperone to the young girls who dance and live
in the opera house. She informs the new patrons that
they must pay The Phantom of the Opera ( Gerard Butler)
or horrible things will begin to happen. They ignore
her and it may prove to be their undoing. First, however,
they must deal with Carlotta. She has walked of the
set again and this time she vows not to come back. Before
they can beg her to come back up, Madame Giry pushes
a shy chorus girl to the front and declares that this
young Christine (Emmy Rossum) can sing in place of Carlotta.
