One of the new trends in Hollywood is the cynical Christmas
movie, “Christmas noir” as it were, a take
on yuletide entertainment that abandons glee and merriment
in favor of deep dark cynicism. The trend began last
year with Bad Santa, a film whose very title had protesters
swarming. Later this year, Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis
“skip” Christmas in Christmas with the Kranks.
And somewhere around the middle is Surviving Christmas,
an offensive, unfunny lump of coal masquerading as a
charming stocking-stuffer. I’m starting to think
this is the work of the Grinch. more..
Reeling Reviews [Robin Clifford] :
It is Christmas time and wealthy advertising
executive Drew Latham (Ben Affleck) suddenly realizes
just how lonely he is. After a tiff with his girlfriend

family’s home any more. Now, the house is owned
by the Valco family. Undeterred, Drew offers them a
not-so-small fortune if he can use the family to have
the treasured holiday his way in “Surviving Christmas.”

Film Blather Review :
Surviving Christmas must be the most demented Christmas
movie of all time, one that shoves holiday cheer down
our throats despite a demonstrably insane protagonist
and a seriously questionable moral fiber. I have a perverse
fascination with bad movies and am usually delighted
to sit through them, but I wanted nothing so much as
to leave. This is the closest I've come to walking out
in my entire moviegoing career. Sitting through this
idiocy is physically painful. more..
