:
In Shall We Dance?, Richard Gere plays a man in the
throes of a mid-life crisis. This is new territory for
the 55-year-old actor who’s always found himself
opposite considerably younger leading ladies. Here,
he actually plays a man his age, and is married to someone
a bit more believable. Has Gere finally grown up? Of
course not! He decides taking ballroom dance lessons
from a woman 20 years his junior will help out of his
funk. more..
Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times :
Richard Gere plays John Clark, not an unhappy
man, in "Shall We Dance?" He loves his wife
and daughter, he enjoys his job as a lawyer, and when
his wife gets that funny look in her eye and asks him
if everything is OK, he says sure, of course, everything
is fine. But there is something missing. One night as
he is returning home on the L train, he notices a woman
standing alone in the window of Miss Mitzi's Dance Studio.

MovieTony.com [Tony Isoldi] :
Shall We Dance? is an American remake of director Masayuki
Suo's 1996 Japanese film of the same name. The original
was a sweet and sublime film, reminding one of a single
red rose. This remake resembles a New Year's Day Rose
parade float. While more flamboyant than the original
film it was based on, Shall We Dance? is enjoyable,
romantic and in no way shallow. Hokey as it may seem,
you might want to go dancing after viewing this movie.
