With
a dead body laying between them, two men (Whannell
and Elwes) wake up in the secure lair of a serial
killer who's been nicknamed "Jigsaw"
by the police because of his unusual calling card. |

IMDB :
Creative limitations and rookie errors relegate Saw
to the annals of Bad Cinema. That is, depending on your
taste, an advocation on the film's behalf or a quick
dismissal; still, the general thought here is that director
James Wan couldn't have intended to walk such a fine
line between stupid and clever. And my prevailing opinion
is that he definitely shouldn't have sapped the tension
created in his distressing opening scene with, well,
everything that follows it. more..
Tracking Shots by Mark Holcomb :
ike the current, seemingly never ending presidential
campaign season, James Wan's Saw starts off incomprehensibly,
turns nasty in a hurry, and ultimately induces numb
exhaustion. This serial-killer potboiler chains two
ostensibly unrelated mooks (Cary Elwes and co-screenwriter
Leigh Whannell) in a makeshift dungeon, where several
strategic clues have been planted to reveal the grisly
fate their unseen captor has in store for them.

filmcritic.com :
The Saw trailer almost made me soil myself, and that
was just from watching it in a 2-inch-wide screen at
my desk and in broad daylight. Saw’s story is
high-concept and tantalizing: A madman is forcing strangers
to play sick games as some form of punishment: A wrist-slashing
suicide survivor is forced to burrow through a room
full of razor wire or else he’ll be entombed in
the chamber. A drug addict has to chop a key out of
a living person’s stomach to keep her face from
exploding. And a doctor (Cary Elwes) finds himself chained
in a dingy toilet with a stranger (Leigh Whannell),
with a dead body between the two. Mind games ensue,
as a series of messages and clues indicate that one
will have to kill the other, and perhaps both will be
forced to use hacksaws on their own extremities in order
to escape. Our killer never kills anyone directly: He
simply engineers it so they kill themselves during the
game.
