Racing Stripes will be very familiar territory for many
filmgoers, especially those who saw and adored 1995's
Babe. While Babe was a pig raised by sheepdogs and was
actually under the impression that he was a dog, Stripes
is a zebra who believes he is a horse. And he has the
the heart of a racing champion. At the beginning of the
film, young Stripes (voiced by Frankie Muniz of "Malcolm
In The Middle" fame) is accidentally left behind
when the traveling circus he is in gets stuck in the
mud on a rainy night. He is rescued by Nolan Walsh (Greenwood),
a Kentucky farmer with a successful history of raising
thoroughbreds. He takes Stripes home, and his daughter
Channing (Panettiere) takes an immediate liking to him.

:
Anybody making a family film about talking
barnyard animals needs to measure themselves up against
Babe. Racing Stripes comes nowhere close in terms of
quality or enjoyment, but as a family friendly film,
is surprisingly decent, especially compared to what
else passes on the screen for live-action family fare.
This is the story of a zebra who wants to be a racehorse.
Underlying this is the search for identity and belonging,
reflected both in the animal and human characters. The
one aspect that ruins this and most other family films
is the inclusion of the fart joke. This makes for easy
but tasteless laughs, and tarnishes what would otherwise
be a more enjoyable film. More..

During a violent thunderstorm, a baby zebra (voice of
Frankie Muniz) is accidentally left behind by a traveling
circus. Horse-farmer Nolan Walsh (Bruce Greenwood) finds
the little colt on the rain-swept road and takes him
home to his daughter, Channing (Hayden Panettiere).
She dubs him Stripes and brings him into the farm’s
animal society. There is a strong spirit of adventure
within the feisty little animal and, with the help of
the rest of the barnyard critters, he aspires to run
with the big guys and win the prestigious Kentucky Open
in “Racing Stripes.”
