So for those of you who want to know the big secret
of Hide and Seek but don't feel like actually plunking
down your lettuce to see a film that will doubtlessly
suck, this is the review for you. Herein I will reveal
the mystery of this tepid, horribly predictable thriller
that all but knocks once-great Robert DeNiro from his
twitchy, squinty throne of actorly awesomeness and establishes
Dakota Fanning as the new Juliette Lewis, who -- after
being psychologically tormented by Robert DeNiro --
is destined to be batshit insane in every role she plays
for the rest of her career. .

Review By Joshua Tyler :
Hide and Seek is yet another movie in which
rich white people who don’t seem to have or need
jobs move to a mansion in the country to be terrorized
by a mysterious, faceless, evil. We’ve seen this
scenario a thousand times before in movies like What
Lies Beneath, Secret Window, and What About Bob? (because
no one plays pure evil quite like Bill Murray). Once
in awhile it might be nice to see secretive evil start
its killing spree somewhere urban, maybe in a poor or
slightly middle-class community. It’s as if by
rote of their wealth these people’s lives are
so perfect, that nothing can shatter them but the most
bizarre or supernatural of circumstances. Sometimes
it even takes Satan himself. The rest of us are so busy
with daily concerns like making enough money to feed
our kids, or getting home without being shot by a drug
dealer, that we don’t have time to be stalked
by maniac killers and homicidal ghosts. Knowing this,
they kindly leave us alone. More..

"He says he would have satisfied her." There
are those who find the entirety of John Polson's Hide
and Seek ludicrous, laughable and worthless. I am not
one of them. Perhaps it is because I was engaged in
this story, because I had emotional capital invested
in its mystery, that its resolution left me disappointed,
angry and vowing revenge. The movie turns out to be
such an idiotic, bald-faced cheat that the skillful
build-up almost makes it worse. I think I might prefer
consistent mediocrity to something that lifts you up
and then slams you down.
