Corpse Bride |
On
a walk to his bride-to-be's village, Victor (Depp)
recites his vows in a joking fashion. After he's

a living corpse (Bonham Carter) emerges from the
ground beneath him, demanding her rights as his
wife. |

5 out of 10 stars: Director Tim Burton's Corpse Bride
is a visual marvel, a rich and sumptuous animated film,
where almost any single frame would be worthy of freezing
and putting up on a wall. Unfortunately all those frames
run together making for another confused (and sometimes
boring) attempt by Mr. Burton to put his ardent feelings
for stop-motion animation and Edward Gorey-gothic themes
into a film that succeeds as a whole. They don't and
it doesn't.......more..

Kline:
The svelte maiden may
have luscious pink lips and an amazingly ample bosom.
But there's one thing that keeps her from being the
ideal wife-to-be: She's not alive! In Tim Burton's imaginative
stop-motion animated production, the rotting-flesh musical-romance
"Corpse Bride," the title character has blue
skin, a leg bone that detaches when she pirouettes and
an eyeball that pops out to reveal her skull's resident
maggot. This should tell you much of what you need to
know about this subversively enchanting love triangle
— featuring the grateful dead and their repressed
living counterparts on parallel levels of existence
in an evocative Victorian English setting. Religious
literalists and paranoid parents may rightly be uncomfortable
with the morbid undertones, expecting something more
benign in this kid-friendly medium. But as co-directed
with Mike Johnson, Burton continues what he started
in 1993's similarly macabre "The Nightmare Before
Christmas.". ......More..
