The truest thing that can be said about "Closer"
is that Julia Roberts nearly tanks it. Partly it's a
matter of an actress having the wrong essence for a
role. Partly it's a case of her making ungenerous, safe
and misguided acting choices. Either way, whenever Roberts
is onscreen, "Closer" freezes and starts to
atrophy. And when she's off, tender shoots of life begin
to sprout. more..
Review by filmfreak :
A girl takes off and cleans a guy's glasses
on her jacket as he's talking, then gently replaces
them. She asks him what a euphemism for her would be
and he tells her: "Disarming." "That's
not a euphemism." But he assures her that it is.
A girl takes a picture of a guy, a guy talks to another
guy through the anonymity of a computer screen, a guy
visits a girl performing at a peepshow and offers her
a large amount of money to tell him her real name. A
guy meets a girl at an aquarium where she'll go to steal
pictures of strangers as they look at the captive marine
life in the blue glow of sharks circling. Mike Nichols'
Closer is beautifully directed from Patrick Marber's
adaptation of his own play, shot with an extraordinary
amount of verve and resonance around the loaded themes
of ways of seeing (glasses, cameras, correspondence)
and their connection to voyeurism, objectification and
confinement, and forms of physical and emotional abuse.

Seething with anger and raging with obsessive behavior,
Mike Nichols’s “Closer” is a terrific
battle-of-the-sexes follow-up to his landmark film,
“Carnal Knowledge.” Supported by flawless
performances from Natalie Portman and a watertight Clive
Owen, “Closer” is an honest, dangerous,
and riveting motion picture from start to finish. When
obituary writer Dan (Jude Law) meets former stripper
Alice (Natalie Portman) by accident one day on a crowded
London street, his life changes forever and he falls
deeply in love. That is, until he meets photographer
Anna (Julia Roberts) a year later, and his romantic
crosshairs move over to her. Trouble is, she’s
involved with dermatologist Larry (Clive Owen), who
is extremely protective of her, but he is paralyzed
with revulsion as he watches Anna succumb to Dan’s
charms. In a fit of desperation, Larry sets his sights
on Alice, thus forming a dark chain of treachery and
adultery that is destined to destroy everyone involved.
