Film Freak Central [Walter Chaw] :
Hard to know by their films whether Michael Bay or Brett
Ratner is the bigger asshole, but when cold reaches
a certain level it's just cold, so I'm comfortable calling
it a draw. Ratner's latest, After the Sunset, is Trouble
in Paradise by way of the Pierce Brosnan version of
The Thomas Crown Affair: a joyless exercise in the sex-play
heist genre featuring a plastic couple for whom, when
they first met, it was grand larceny. Along the way,
there's enough leering misogyny to satisfy a legion
of folks either too young or too afraid of God to go
rent some good old-fashioned, red-blooded porn. Audiences
for this garbage choose instead to slake their venal
lusts, to for a moment calm the roil of inadequacy and
self-doubt at the public trough of screaming homophobia,
queer gun-fondling, and enough women making bad decisions
in front of a camera-wielding man to fill a "Girls
Gone Wild" video.. more..
FromTheBalcony [Victoria Alexander] :
Earlier this year armed robbers walked right
into a lightly guarded Oslo museum and ripped several
paintings from the walls before the eyes of stunned
visitors. They were even photographed by a passerby
hauling out Edvard Munch’s masterpiece “The
Scream.” Daring, exciting heists do take place
in real life, but there is no such bold heist in AFTER
THE SUNSET. (The stature of THE SCREAM indicates that
this painting was stolen specifically for someone who
wants it not to show it off but to own it. Now there’s
a story worth telling.)

Movie Gurus :
Suave and masterful thief Max Burdett (Pierce Brosnan)
has decided, along with his longtime partner and lover
Lola Cirillo (Selma Hayek), to retire to the Bahamas
after completing yet another successful jewel heist.
They are trying to enjoy their vacation when FBI Agent
and Burdett's perpetual nemesis, Stan Lloyd (Woody Harrelson)
shows up. Lloyd believes that Burdett's vacation/retirement
is just a front for another heist. Lending this hypothesis
more credibility is the fact that a cruise ship holding
the only Napoleon Diamond that Burdett hasn't stolen
is about to dock. His investigation into Burdett soon
involves a local police officer (Naomie Harris) and
the self-proclaimed "Unofficial Mayor"/kingpin
of the island (Don Cheadle).
