It
has become fashionable for film-makers to try offbeat
subjects but at times in an attempt to be different,
they end up making a mess of things. This is the case
with ‘Vaada’. To give credit where it’s
due, the film captures you in the first ten minutes
but leaves you high and dry after that. Also it has
an interesting climax, that is if the audience is still
seated and hasn’t walked out by then! The basic
premise of the film seems okay but the screenplay is
a major letdown.
There is a blind man,
Rahul (Arjun Rampal), who is not really blind but is
pretending to be. To worsen things, we are forced to
go through the agony of his friend (read enemy), Karan
(Zayed Khan), getting suspicious about his blind status
and devising ways and means to expose the truth.
Cut to the beginning.
Puja (Amisha Patel) is married to Rahul and decides
to commit suicide one morning. Why? Watch the film if
you really want to know why. But if you want some serious
bit of advice, you would be better off without finding
this out. There is a terrible car accident and Rahul
loses his eyesight. On a business trip abroad, Rahul
meets Karan and is impressed by his business acumen,
Rahul asks him to join his business. They return to
India. Puja is stunned to see her husband with her ex-lover,
Karan.
While Rahul gives Puja
unconditional love, Karan was an obsessive lover. Zayed
overdoes his obsessive bit and overacts in some sequences.
Anyway, Puja is trapped between a blind husband and
an obsessed lover. Rahul smells foul play.
At times the film seems
like the work of an amateur. The showdown sequences
between Rahul and Karan also seem very amateurish. Probably
thrillers are not his forte, but director Satish Kaushik
had best stay away from it. Cinematography [Johny Lal]
is okay and action scenes by Abbas Ali are well executed.
Of the songs, 'Teri Kurti', is the only foot-tapping
number.
Arjun plays his part
well. Zayed is okay except in parts where he overacts.
The biggest disappointment comes in the form of Amisha
Patel. She tries to look over-confident leaving her
with no vulnerability. As for her looks and clothes,
the less said the better. She looks garish most of the
times. This film drags endlessly and is a major disappointment
