After
Gadar, director Anil Sharma has tasted blood and can
do only with big budget films. This time round he once
again brings an action packed thriller bashing the Pakistanis
big time. The Hero tells the story about Major Arun
Khanna (Sunny Deol) who works for the Indian Secret
Service Agent- RAW and has set up his spy in network
in the village Kupwada, Kashmir. A villager Reshma (Preity
Zinta) becomes a part of his spy network who is assigned
to go across the border on a mission. She impersonates
as a maidservant in Colonel Hidayatulla's (Deep Dhillon)
house who is planning to make a nuclear bomb to destroy
India. Here he has the help of a senior pak agent (Amrish
Puri). Reshma overhears their plan and is caught. But
she escapes to India where Major admits his love for
her. But in a bomb explosion they both separate thinking
the other dead. Reshma with injured legs is air dashed
to Canada for treatment by a saviour (Pravin Dabas).
Meanwhile Major Khanna learns that the villains are
in Canada planning another bomb attack. Here he meets
Shayna (Priyanka Chopra) a doctor treating Reshma. But
her father Zakaria (Kabir Bedi) is a partner with the
villains. How Khanna fights for his love and exposes
the criminals forms the edge-of-the-seat climax. Anil
Sharma's ahs tried his best to give the viewers a mega
adventure the scene of the avalanche is a reminder of
the same. But then the lacking elements in the story
and screenplay and missing emotions of love make Hero
a lesser film. Uttam Singh's music is not up to the
standard. Only In Mast Nigahon Mein makes a mark leaving
the rest in oblivion. Sunny Deol as usual perform well
which is expected of him as he was born for such roles.
He has some good looking get ups in the film and action
that speaks for itself. Preity Zinta is just there for
fillers in songs and with her not so great role she
does well. While the poor Priyanka Chopra has been misused.
She looks great but her debut could have been better.
The Hero is a film lavishly produced and has its big
moments. Its the small moments which make the film a
whole. Without them Hero doesnt touch your heart. Plus
the music is a letdown. So maybe the action lovers will
love the film for all its worth.
