From
the sound of it, 'Tango Charlie' sounds like a comedy
film. You are not wrong in mistaking it to be one. There
is quite a bit of comedy in it. But going by the posters,
one obviously infers that it's a war film! You are right
on that score too!
The story of the film
is different, something that hasn't been attempted earlier.
It is about the fight between the Border Security Forces
and the terrorists in our country. It shows the human
side of our BSF officers and their sacrifices for the
nation. But somewhere 'Tango Charlie' fails to strike
a chord.

The first half is impressive
but falls drastically post interval. The only bits of
relief in the second bit are the Indian Air Force helicopter
pilots, Squadron Leader Vikram Rathore (Sanjay Dutt)
and Flight Lieutenant Shezad Khan (Suniel Shetty), who
seem to be passing their time flying and suddenly spot
a number of bodies strewn all over the place.
They carry out a rescue
operation despite a 'No-Go' owing to bad weather. The
basic first-aid is carried out and a diary is discovered.
This takes them on a tour across the nation with Sepoy
Tarun Chauhan (Bobby Deol) whose code name is Tango
Charlie. Thus the name of the film as it covers Tarun's
journey through life, his love Lachchi (Tanishaa), his
battles, his fears, and the influence of his mentor,
Mohammed Ali (Ajay Devgan) on his life.

So that way the film
is unique. The film has some well-executed action sequences
especially in the first half. Mani Shankar's handling
of the subject deserves credit, but how one wishes he
hadn't faltered in the second half. Despite his 'Rudraksh',
one expected a lot from the director of '16th December!
Music of the film is
no great shakes except for 'Akkad De Bakkad De'. It
has a good beat. Cinematography by Surendra Reddy is
good
Yet another film that
completely belongs to Ajay Devgan. He carries the film
on his shoulders and delivers a brilliant understated
performance as usual. Bobby Deol is better than usual.
He is good in the comic sequences. Sanjay Dutt and Suniel
Shetty are likeable in their small but significant roles
for providing their brand of comic relief.

The two leading ladies,
Tanishaa and Nandana Sen, have nothing much to do in
this male-dominated film. Tanishaa leaves a lot to be
desired as usual in all departments. Nandana Sen trying
to Indianize herself is stupid. She too has decided
to resort to the skin show, that's if anyone is really
interested!
Of the supporting cast,
Kelly Dorji stands out. He makes a great impact. Don't
be surprised if this heralds the entry of a new screen
villain. Mukesh Tiwari is wasted. Sudesh Berry, and
Shahbaaz Khan are okay. Alok Nath and Tiku Talsania
are their usual selves. On the whole, 'Tango Charlie'
is decent. It may work at the box-office not only for
its star cast but also for the lack of a good film since
weeks.
