'Shikhar'
is the second movie from director John M. Matthan who
first movie was the 'Sarfarosh', however unfortunately
this time he doesn't quite match up to his debut. The
potential is there as is the background of the characters
however flaws in the screenplay cause it to drag and
become unnecessarily long.
In 'Shikhar' we are presented with two ideologies, we
meet Gaurav Gupta- GG (Ajay Devgan) who as a property
tycoon sees nothing but money; above everything he is
hungry with greed and money. Nothing can come between
him and his lust for money and wealth, he wants to make
a new city and he will lie, cheat and manipulate just
to fulfil his dreams.
On the opposite side is Guruji (Javed Sheikh) who as
a business man has now turned social activist and runs
an orphanage in an eco friendly environment. However
his view is that if wealth is not used in society then
it has no use.
But in between these two is Guruji's son Jaidev ( Shahid
Kapoor) who although his father wished he would return
to his roots is taken under GG's wing and is exposed
to the fast life of drinking, women and gambling as
he leaves behind his 'simple' life and the woman who
loves him Madhavi (Amrita Rao).
Don't forget Natasha (Bipasha Basu) who is GG's girlfriend
who he uses to entice the politician, to help take over
the tribal land he so wishes to build his city on.
Yet before it is too late Jaidev sees the right path
as GG is exposed.
The first half of the
movie engages the audience right away as the characters
are established and we are exposed to GG's actual lifestyle
and his cheating ways. We see the transformation of
Jaidev as the simpleton who is now head of a multi crore
company as he is in this new world of riches.
Still as the second
half sees Jaidev (Shahid) emerging out of the shadows
and wanting to go back to his previous life, it is the
all too predictable climax and ending that you would
expect.
Ajay Devgan plays his
role well as a business tycoon, he's slick, ruthless
and carries off his style well in this negative role.Shahid
Kapoor , as the simple guy transforming into this city
slicker is efficient but towards the end he could have
matured more with his character in order to justify
his role.
Bipasha Basu is excellent in her role and definitely
adds the glamour required, the one track that does stand
out is 'Fitna Dil' that just adds that life to the movie
that is needed.
Amrita Rao has excellent potential and although her
role is small and could have been expanded more to show
her potential.Javed Sheikh fits his role well and is
sufficient enough.
On the whole, you can
see the actors have worked hard at their roles, but
the screenplay just does not move you in any way, don't
expect any Bollywood glitz or glamour. The one thing
that perhaps is worth a watch is the cinematography
of Thailand which is pleasant to watch.A bit too lengthy
and disappointing in places.
