It's
easy to fall in love-but what's it like to share your
life with someone? This is the basis of Siddharth Raj
Anand's first movie 'Salaam Namaste' A refreshingly
different and modern way of telling a love story, one
that is supported by excellent dialogues as provided
by Abbas Tyrewala alongside commendable performances.
Meet Nick ( Saif Ali) the head chef in a famous restaurant
in Melbourne, from Ludhiana. Nick loves his life, he
loves to cook, party and live his life without any commitments
as well as waking up late very day.
Ambar Malhotra (Priety) meanwhile originally came from
Bangalore to Melbourne to study medicine, but her real
love for Melbourne lies in the fact that she can avoid
the confrontations she must face at home as her parents
are constantly trying to find suitors for her. As a
part time radio jockey, Ambar gets to interview Indians
living in Melbourne. When Nick is invited to Ambar's
show he accidentally sleeps over and misses the interview
altogether! Ambar, furious decides to teach Nick a few
lessons in punctuality and manners. But initially hating
each other, they begin to fall in love with each other,
as they say Cupid works in mysterious ways.
They eventually move in together and decide to share
their lives with one another.
They fight, they bicker, have funny moments all in the
same apartment day in day out. However things take an
unexpected turn as Ambar falls pregnant, and the decision
they must make is what will be the make or break of
their relationship.
It isn't easy to film, without over dramatization of
characters to show how they must grow within their own
character, and Siddharth Raj does so successfully. Not
too many songs are present and in actual fact there
really is no need as the weight of the story can hold
its own, evenly distributing out any funny moments alongside
the serious twists present it really doesn't go over
the top. The chemistry between both Saif and Priety
is evident, and they make an excellent on screen couple
with brilliant chemistry and it shows, as we see Nick
and Ambar's personality rise from the two actor's own
personalities.
With the ever dependable Arshad Warsi as Nick's best
friend he is not short of the funny one liner's that
add that feel good factor to the movie. It's Arshad's
advice on the trials and tribulations of marital affairs
that enables the director to present the opinion of
how a man sees a woman and vice-versa.
Also in a supporting role is Javed Jaffari as the nosey
Bihari Cowboy Landlord in Melbourne with lines like
'Wife works Husband Jerks' you are not short of a few
laughs! The cinematography is brilliant and completely
sets the mood and tone, it doesn't over -do the whole
'Desi's living in a foreign country' thing, it's subtle
and realistic. The title song 'Paune Barah Baje' is
superb; Ahmed Khan's choreography is spot on for the
mood of the film.
The film truly belonged to Saif Ali Khan, who straight
after his performance in 'Parineeta' shows his versatility
as an actor as he gives the cool, laidback guy performance
really well. It's not just in the comedy moments, emotionally
his performances shines too.
Priety's pregnant belly though! Uggh! Somebody sort
it out! It is so over the top and unreal it looks horrible
and saggy- that was possibly one of the major flaws,
however once you acknowledge the fact that she is having
twins it doesn't look so bad in hindsight! Still make
sure you look out for Abhishek Bachchan's cameo appearance
in the final climatic scenes in the hospital, fantastic
as the goofy Doctor a fantastic bonus! 'Salaam Namaste'
is a young, vibrant, and very urban. With such a progressive
subject that any young kids can relate to today. So
original for a Hindi movie and refreshingly different
at times you even forget is this really 'Bollywood'
that I am watching? One of the best movies around lately,
'Salaam Namaste' will teach you a thing or two about
relationships it's definitely worth checking out!
