De Basanti Movie Review :

Films
like 'Rang De Basanti' only come around once in a while-
so if anything Do believe the hype! Rakeysh Omprakash
Mehra's movie is not only beautifully shot this movie
is different in the manner in which is presented as
the past and present are juxtaposed together, to express
the views and sentiments of the young children involved,
progressing throughout the movie.Rang De Basanti'
based around a college campus, we see how an English
filmmaker Sue arrives in India to make a film on Indian
revolutionaries such as Bhagat Singh, Chandrashekhar
Azad and the people that fought for freedom from the
British Raj. However as she has lack of funds she turn
to a college in Delhi where she recruits students to
act for her docu- drama.
Here we meet some very
colourful characters:DJ: (Aamir Khan) A college dropout
from at least five years, but still remains there as
to him the real world has nothing to offer.Karan (Siddharth)
The son of an Industrialist (Rajnath Singhania) and
although he has a difficult relationship with his father
he continues to freeload off him.
Aslam (Kunal Kapoor)
A Muslim boy from a middle class background who is philosophical,
he lives near the Jama Mosque, he's a believer, a poet
and the straight path for all his friends.Sukhi (Sharman
Joshi) The youngest of the group, he's easily misled
and very vulnerable- his one weakness? Women.
Laxman Pandey (Atul
Kalkarni) He is the fundamentalist of the group and
it is his belief that the world will be a much better
place through politics.Sonia (Soha Ali Khan) The only
female of the group, the tomboy with the fighting sprit,
she is also engaged to Ajay (Madhavan) the air pilot. As
Sue progresses with her docu-drama the group can not
take their roles seriously, until Ajay tragically dies
in a MIG crash and is labelled as just a amateur pilot,
and with the Defence Minister refusing any faults in
the MIG's. As a result the group get together with Ajay's
mother ( Waheeda Rehman) to lead a protest against the
Defence Minister and to prove Ajay's true worth as a
piliot.
The protest turns nasty and as very protestor is beaten
by the police Ajay's mother falls into a coma. DJ and
his friends need to bring the truth out, and the path
they choose in which to do it, is an extreme one indeed. The
story is well crafted and as it begins on a light hearted
note, the second half is one of a serious depth. Some
tear jerking moments are definitely present and will
move the hardest of people. The way in which director
Mehra has shown the past interwoven with the present
is excellent. Very original, especially as the locations
are kept in the same time periods. The DAV college in
Lahore which then becomes the Radio station in the ending
is a fine example.
Aamir Khan is simply
excellent as DJ, he shows his versatility as an actor
with his use of Punjabi dialect, as the odd dialogue
is thrown in here and there displaying true authenticity.
Alice Patten is well cast, her efforts in speaking Hindi
really pay off in the movie. The rest of the cast, are
all so superbly cast, that each character gets the opportunity
to show their worth and shine in their own true light.
It isn't just one particular actor or character that
has 'made' the film as such because the manner in which
the entire cast has gelled and connected together has
reflected on screen.
The entire cast has had a good time filming this and
it shows too. With an excellent music score, and with
the songs placed so well they fit right in with the
story and do not deter from the actual narrative at
all. This is a definite must and you will not know it's
full extent and true worth until you experience 'Rang
De Basanti' for yourself. Don't miss this one!
