Priyadarsan
( 'Garam Masala' Fame) brings 'Malamaal Weekly' a wacky
and funny movie about the trials and tribulations of
everyday people in a small town. This time however it
fails to live up to expectations. The story revolves
around a village Laholi with the villagers barely able
to make ends meet, the people of this time are hounded
by bad luck, be it the lack of money, the poor harvest
or even the crazy money lender called Karamkall. Meet
Lilaram (Paresh Rawal), he lives in this small town
and his means of earning an income (although it is quite
weak) is by selling the weekly 'Malamaal' lottery tickets.
While at a tea stall one day, he sees an announcement
made that a ticket has won the one crore rupee jackpot,
and in actual fact the ticket was brought from him!As
the majority of people in this town don't own a television
set and are also illiterate, Lilaram wants his hands
on this ticket. He needs to find the winner amongst
the 105 tickets that he has sold.
An idea hits him! Why not throw a party for all the
buyers of the 105 lottery tickets? One condition though,
the actual tickets must be brought to the party as invites.
Everyone jumps at the chance, a party such as this is
a luxury, for people struggling to make ends meet they
can think of nothing more. So Lilaram manages to host
this party but already knee deep in debt he sells his
last asset a Kid Goat ( Which by the way is treated
like a child by Lilaram's wife!)
Everybody turns up to the party except one- that is
known as Anthony who is a drunkard. Lilaram decides
to pay him a little visit and much to his surprise he
finds Anthony slumped dead in front of the TV!Anthony
has died of shock on hearing he has won the jackpot
- with the ticket still in his hand! That's when the
real fun begins! Just as Lilaram wants to help himself
to Anthony's ticket and winnings he is caught out by
the village milkman Balwant (Om Puri), so to hide the
secret he wants a cut of the winnings too! A little
situation arises though, before they have a chance to
hide the body, Balwant's servant Khaniya ( Ritesh Deshmukh)
sees them.
One problem, Khaniya is in love with Balwant's daughter
Sukhmani (Reema Sen) and guess what he wants a share
of the money too!The more they try to cover up this
'secret' the more they are exposed and eventually the
entire village comes to know and everyone is in a mad
race for the winnings. That is until the Lottery Inspector
Jayesh (Arbaaz Khan) turns up to uncover the truth and
find the winner.
What then follows is a series of sub - plots that run
quite parallel to the rest of the story. It can get
a bit tiring at times, and for the average viewer there
seems to be so much going on. With just the one song
that has Rakhi Sawant as the item girl it seems like
a long movie. It is long and does drag in parts, it
could have been cut short in some parts.
Paresh Rawal does steal the show, he has the best lines
and his comic timing is excellent. Equally just as good
is Om Puri and the two do comical justice on screen
. Ritesh Deshmukh seems to be in the background but
it seems a shame because he has so much more talent,
yet with two heavyweights such as Rawal and Puri you
can see why he has been dwarfed as such. Nonetheless
he does a convincing job. Reema Sen is barely though
but is sufficient enough.
Look out for Sudha Chandran who plays the village Thakurani,
she plays her role well and with convincing authority
too. Rajpal Yadav who plays her brother has held his
role well and manages to hold his own. Special appearances
by Shakti Kapoor and Arbaaz Khan are enough to make
an impact on their roles.
Overall this comedy does have some funny moments, but
at times you can see they are trying too hard which
can spoil the moment. A sturdy cast and excellent acting,
also the make-up, setting and scenes are done with effort
and you can see that time has been spent in order for
the actual village feel to come through on screen. But
the script is a let down and could have been so much
more. Just Time-pass viewing really. Average.
