Lucky Movie Review :

We've heard of the older man-younger girl romance, but a school kid and a mature guy where they even decide to live together forever! Come on, give us another one! Agreed this is larger than life and a make believe world but in the age of realistic cinema we would rather see something closer to reality.

The story of 'Lucky' is set against the romantic backdrop of St. Petersburg. It is a tale of love that brings together two people who were destined to meet. Lucky (Sneha Ullal) is a dreamer. Wonder why she's given such a silly name in the film! She strongly believes that if you search from the bottom of your heart, you will find not just the rainbow, but also the pot of gold at the end of it.

One morning Lucky is riding on her cycle to school, praying that she clears her test, scheduled on that date. But her journey to school becomes her desperate journey for survival. There is an attempted rape and she hides in a car. True to Hindi film style, the car belongs to the smart, charming, and debonair Aditya (Salman Khan), whom she refers to as Adi.

There is a sudden break of riots and the two are trapped in the jungle. (How Mills and Boonish!) Aditya and Lucky have nothing in common. She's extremely naïve (very unlike the present day school kids her age) and Adi is the 'been-there-done-it' sort. They are bound together by just one common goal - to reach home safely.

A strange friendship develops between the two. And now begins an unforgettable journey filled with violence and tragedy. The friendship blossoms into love and all's well that ends well. The two reach home safely and we rightly assume, are to be married soon.

The film starts off well, but soon comes to an irritating pace. The post-interval portions are unbearably slow and boring. Some of the dialogues by Milap Zaveri, especially in the first half of the film are fun.

The music is disappointing. Surprising considering Salman is said to be very finicky about the music of his films. 'Sun Zara' is the only memorable and hummable track. Otherwise the music is lackluster.

The breath-taking locales of Russia are well captured. The film makes great visual impact but this much is expected of music video directors. Otherwise the naivety of the first-time directors is obvious.

Now for the performances. Salman is his usual good looking and naughty self but honestly to watch Salman as a goody goody lover boy who expresses his love through his eyes only is irritating. He just can't pull off these characters.

Debutant Sneha Ullal is photogenic, tries to act confidently but unfortunately cannot act. She just looks confident. She is soft, beautiful and gentle. But if you try to compare her to Ash, then you will be thoroughly disappointed. Her close-ups are not breathtaking like the original's. Besides, she is listless and does not have the joie de vivre of an 18-year-old. But she does look pretty in a few sequences. The only alluring bits about her are her innocence and frailty. But to give her credit, she looks the character - that of a school girl. Some of her sequences with Salman are cute. But there are two things that will surely go against her. Her slight resemblance to Ash that will increase people's expectations of her, and her weak voice.

All said and done, despite her frail beauty, she has no screen presence or oomph value. But the on-screen chemistry between Salman and her is endearing. Don't know if this is Salman's inborn charm with pretty women working on screen but they make a nice pair, if one is not reminded that she is a school kid!

Mithun Chakraborty is wasted once again. He comes across as a buffoon rather than an intelligence officer. Commercially the film has no mass appeal (what with the lack of oomph and the characters including Sallu breaking into Russian at times!). So if the makers are lucky, the Salman fan club loyalty and the fact that there have been extremely bad films releasing in the past so many weeks could work in its favour. But hey! Don't take our word for it, go out and watch the movie and be your own critic!
