Masala Movie Review :

Laugh
you socks off! Get ready for some witty one liners and
slapstick all round in Priyadarshan's comedy 'Garam
Masala.' Don't expect an intelligent plot, a movie like
this just doesn't need one, the humour within it is
more than enough.
The movie is based around the airline industries and
in the airline industry what do you have? Air hostesses
and when there are air hostesses it spells nothing but
trouble! Even more so for Mac (Akshay Kumar) a luckless
photographer, a charmer, he's smooth and he knows how
to make the ladies feel special.
The one guy who can make them feel like he only has
eyes for them only- but Mac has other ideas! Making
that one girl feel special in his life is no hard job
for Mac, he can do it on a regular basis! But one small
problem- he is tied to Anjali (Rimmi Sen) who also just
happens to be his fionce! Along comes Mr Cool himself
(John Abraham) as Sam and if Mac is up for some competition
then he is it! But if Mac thinks he's clever with the
women, there is always someone out there that can do
one better! Sam is no exception, cool, silent but deep
rooted his moves are quick and slick. Women instantly
fall for his charms in his sneaky ways.
So even though Mac and Sam are friends
in the picture is also Mac's cook Mambo (Paresh Rawal)
who is dedicated and loyal and knows all the truths
to Mac's devious ways. With one thing in common- Girls-
Mac and Sam are the best of friends and one day as no
hoper Mac's luck changes things begin to take a different
turn. Gaining an empty flat, Mac not only gets lucky
with this but he manages to get three stunning beauties
Prate, Sweaty and Poona hot air hostesses in his snare
and makes them believe he is in love with only them.
Sam and Mac fall out and jealous with Mac's achievements
in succeeding with the ladies Sam wants Mac to get maximum
exposure to his wrong doings! Whilst Mambo does his
best to cover everything up, alongside cooking and binning
endless dishes around three of the different women!Comedy
is a delicate business, the lines and timing can go
wrong making the whole thing a disaster, however Priyadarshan
manages to have 'Garam Masala' holding it's own.
It may be slightly
different to 'Hera pheri' but nonetheless it will not
fail to make you laugh or smile. The introduction builds
up to eventually as we are introduced to the characters
and we learn about their on going competition of who
is the best at their game.
One memorable scene is in the restaurant with Neha Dhupia
(In a special appearance), where both Akshay and John
compliment each other and are a great comedy combination.Post
interval and second half of the movie are on fantastic
form, the one liners and comedy situations will make
you laugh out loud as will Akshay's dialogue delivery.
To say the movie is out of control in the second half
is an understatement! Especially when Akshay is attempting
to hide two women in the same house!
Akshay's performance in this movie is definitely worth
some praise, he is much better suited to comedy roles
such as this, as his expressions and mannerisms are
comedy value in their own right.John
Abraham does well to blend in alongside Akshay which
at times does not look so easy; with Akshay being the
senior actor but John's helplessness and boyish charms
win you over.
Paresh Rawal is fantastic as Mambo the overworked and
underpaid cook, at times he doesn't even have to say
anything and his presence will make you laugh, first
rate comedy in all his scenes. The
three new girls, Daisy Bopana, Neetu Chandran and Nargis
all act well considering this is one of their first
big movies, all play their roles as the 'airhead' air
hostesses quite well.
It's a shame that Rajpal Yadav has such a small role,
you do actually enjoy him on screen, he is fantastic
as the go between John and Akshay.
Overall this laugh riot might not have the most of intelligent
plots but your ticket is definitely worth every penny
because you are guaranteed laughs right the way through!
Catch this one if you can - Great Laughs!
