Movie Review : |
Ram
Gopal Varma is at it again! Following 'Darna Marna Hai'
which you might remember around three years ago, 'Darna
Zaroori Hai' is a mixture of six different horror stories
within the movie. Now although the first movie 'Darna
Marna Hai' had one director solely responsible for the
direction of the movie, this time the difference is
- Six stories six different directors and sets of actors
within each story. So set aside the obvious clichés,
you know the graveyard, the secluded house, the drifter
on the highway and you are left with some interesting
combinations of stories. Not necessarily too scary as
such but more entertaining for the viewer.Breaking down
the six 'scary' stories ( as told by a grandmother to
five other children) the first one begins with actor
Manoj Pahwa. This story is directed by Sajid Khan and
has the setting of a graveyard. This is the story of
a film buff who makes it to the cinema every Friday
to keep up with the new releases. Against his mother's
wishes he decides to take the route through the cemetery
to the cinema and back. Claiming that he doesn't believe
in ghosts, Pahwa is however in for a very nasty surprise.
For Sajid Khan and his directorial debut this in fact
is not too bad at all Khan shows potential as an excellent
director.
Story two is directed
by Ram Gopal Varma and stars Amitabh Bachchan and Ritesh
Deshmukh. Amitabh plays a professor who has a student
(Ritesh Deshmukh) round to his house for a tutorial.
However the professor seems to be more pre occupied
by what he thinks is another presence in the house.
Who is this person? Is he in the kitchen? or is he in
the chair? Or has the professor simply just lost is
mind in his old age? Yet don't expect this too be a
horror story as such but do expect some kind of 'shock
value' when he looks in the mirror though!
Story Three is a of
a different kind and is directed by Prawal Rawan (the
man responsible for 'Darna Marna Hai') it stars Bipasha
Basu, Arjun Rampal Makrand Deshpande. After his car
breaks down in the middle of the night a stranger approaches
a bungalow in the middle of nowhere. As he wants to
make a call he is invited in and is met by this particularly
eccentric couple. They both deliberately try and scare
Arjun and attempt to contact spirits after her claims
that he does not believe in them at all. Watch though
what happens after there is a knock at the door. The
conclusion is not what you expect and is very different
this time around. You will be startled. Also Prawal
Rawan's directing is spot on this time.
Story Four sees Suniel
Shetty, Sonali Kulkarni and Rajpal Yadav together in
this bizarre story. With Vivek Shah directing we see
the Maharastrian Couple have an unexpected visitor in
the form of a salesman (Rajpal Yadav) who is very strange
to say the least. Someone is shot here and only then
is the true identity revealed. But you are wondering
though although directed and acted well what exactly
does this have to do with a horror story?Story Five
is Anil Kapoor and Mallika Sherawat directed by Jijy
Philip. Anil Kapoor plays a popular filmmaker who picks
up hitchhiker Mallika Sherawat along the way. In short
we are presented with the conversations of both and
you are questioning throughout just what really is the
identity of this mysterious woman? Actually the climax
of this story is weak and really more could have been
done but the acting from both actors is convincing.
Story Six is probably
the best of the lot. Randeep Hooda, Zakir Hussain and
Rasika Joshi are all directed by Chekeravarthy. We are
shown a man on a rainy night who runs into a woman on
the highway. In the morning he finds himself handcuffed
in a police cell accused of murder - much to his surprise.
With the mother of the victim arriving wait and watch
what happens. Chekeravarthy has delivered one excellent
story here and the performance from all three actors
is truly remarkable this one will keep you on edge!
Overall don't
expect any spine chilling gory horror stuff in 'Darna
Zaroori Hai' the only thing that will possibly keep
your attention is the continuation of different stories
that are changing throughout the movie. Adrenalin may
well be on the up through the genuine shock value that
is provided but don't expect sleepless nights over this
one! Above Average.
