Agnihotri's 'Chocolate' in a nutshell is the Hollywood
movie 'The Usual Suspects.'Except this particular 'Bollywood'
version attempts at being a bit too clever even for
the movie itself! But Agnihotri's directorial debut nevertheless
is clever in the use of cinematography with the stone
washed shades that are used in certain frames to give
it that 'Gangster Feel.' If you remember back to Sanjay
Gupta's 'Kaante' and Anubhav Sinha's 'Dus' the same
light/shade are used to add to the thrill and difference
of the movies.
Without giving too much away, the film is set in London
at Christmas time amongst all of the festivities. Five
Indians living in London, Sim (Tanushree Dutta) the
sexy temptress, Rocker (Suniel Shetty) the obsessed
lover, Pipa (Irfan Khan) a painter, Tubby (Arshad Warsi)
just plain happy go lucky and Devaa (Emraan Hashmi)
who is just passionate about music.Working hard in their
individual jobs in the day, they get together in the
night to form their band and make music. Involved in
a crime one night the two are arrested Pipi and Sim.
Eccentric and Notorious Lawyer Krish (Anil Kapoor) steps
in to aid his fellow country men. As his investigations
begin to take lead, many twists and turns become apparent
in the movie. With a series of flashbacks to explain
the incidents, to the 'non intelligent' viewer this
can become quite confusing and complex. With some sub
plots also there is so much going on in all different
angles at times it takes away the actual grasp of what
the movie is trying to say.
The one thing that saves this movie is the camera work
and setting, it gives the movie a certain style and
flair but with heavy laden dialogue it is all too much
of a drag. With deep and meaningful dialogues, which
ok, at times is necessary for a movie of this calibre
the film tends to be too much of a strain and to be
honest will be too taxing on the mind for the masses
to appreciate. Some of the music does save this perhaps
from being a total disaster; definitely the already
huge hit 'Halka Halka Sa Yeh Sama' and 'Jhuki Jhuki'
gives you some eye candy for a while.
Anil Kapoor, who seems to be starring in almost everything
at the moment, is convincible as the eccentric lawyer,
but at times he does seem to over do it, and you can
see that he enjoys it too! With Irfaan playing the accused,
he shines in his role and is fabulous cast opposite
Kapoor, as they battle it out in a number of scenes
together.Tanushree does
a good job as the temptress and looks the part; Suniel
Shetty meanwhile with his new hair style has you thinking
about in which direction he is heading which leaves
much to be desired about his 'acting skills.'Emraan
Hashmi and Arshad Warsi's roles needed to be widened.
Warsi a top rate actor is wasted but nonetheless has
some funny lines such as 'There are two kinds of Women.
Sexy and very sexy.'Although this film has many twists
and turns, with real effort put into some of the action
sequences, you can not be too sure how this will fair
with the box office.Not
you're usual Bollywood Movie that is for the crowds.
The characters are well drafted out, but possibly not
the right selection of actors are playing some of the
roles that require greater depth.Watch 'Chocolate' and
see what you think of this 'Desi' Version of 'The Usual
Supsects.'
