Movie Review :
Im sure you have heard of both
the "term" Good Cop and Bad Cop. This term
used in many Hollywood films, has also been very present
in our Bollywood films too. Editor turned Director,
Shimit Amin , shows you a whole new meaning to the word
"Grey Cop" -- not too bad and not too good.
A cop who stands for his values and ethics ( when it
comes to supporting the law) and has no value for the
law of the land ( when its plain simple convenient !!
) -- this is what the film is about.
Veteran art actor Nana Patekar plays
Sadhu Agashe, who is an integral member of the Mumbai
Crime branch only for 1 reason -- to be a part of 56
encounters and many more. While the film is about cops
killing gangsters, their is a "sub-plot" to
the film. Inspector Imtiaz Siddiqui (Yashpal Sharma)
is most jealous of Agashe's ways and while you are wondering
why the film is so predictable, atleast the "sub-plot"
keeps your grey cells in the "imagination mode".
Revathi plays Namita ( Agashe's wife) and Kunal Vijayekar
plays Francis, another member in the crime branch.
If one keeps aside all the hype, ( movie
is based on the life of one time Udipi waiter turned
cop, Daya Nayak's illustrious life) the film is nothing
but a senseless portrayal of how the Mumbai police functions
-- been there, done that. Movies in the past have shown
this. More so , right from the beginning to the end
the plot not only is wafer thin, but one imagines, that
had it not been a Ram Gopal Varma Film, their wouldn't
be even such a hype in the first place.
Patekar, is great only when it comes
to one form of emotion --- complete contempt to all
standing around him ! Furthermore the language in the
film is quite objectionable, in most times the foul
mouth is used more for "effect", which after
a while gets a bit on your nerves ( no im not a school
teacher). Revathi has a small role, but her performance
stands out. Yashpal Sharma has shown true versatility
in this role while Kunal Vijayakar is under utilised.
The background score of the film by
Salim-Sulaiman is very good -- one of the few things
one would like to appreciate . Finally one really wonders,
whats the point in making a film which has no purposeful
storyline ? |
