This
Diwali, Bollywood fans will be served quite a treat,
as not one or two, but five releases are lined up for
the weekend of celebration. Headed against Yash Chopra's
much-awaited 'Veer-Zaara', Sanjay Gupta's latest - titled
'Musafir' - seems to have the potential to join the
rank of such classics as 'Kaante' and 'Vaastav'.
'Musafir' stars Anil
Kapoor, Sameera Reddy, Sanjay Dutt, Aditya Panscholi,
Priyanka Chopra and Mahesh Manjrekar. The story centers
around Lucky (Kapoor), a young man who has just emerged
from a childhood of delinquency, and wishes to recapture
his innocence and natural goodness - he wants a fresh
beginning to his life. However, in his arduous journey,
he meets up with obstacles attempting to draw him back
towards corruption, and these temptations lure Lucky
to commit one last crime that will guarantee him money
for his future and for his new life.
But his struggles toughen,
as he if first tricked by his own girlfriend, comes
into contact with a drug lord (Dutt) who wants his life,
and is offered money by another criminal to kill another.
The film sheds light
on the dark side of human existence - it reminds viewers
of the struggle between morality and corruption, and
how easy it is to be pulled towards the latter. Viewers
will not help but to feel sympathetic towards Lucky
in the film, as his circumstances allow for no leeway
in decision-making, and he is forced to take dangerous
and precarious paths.
The music of the film,
composed by Vishal and Shekhar, is uniquely created
and carried out. Sanjay Gupta has shot an entire song,
including four Spanish female models, inside a stretched
limousine. Even more interestingly, Gupta is introducing
a brand new concept - he will be releasing a double
album under two separate titles - Musafir Lounge and
Musafir Club. And yes, the rumors are true: The CD/audio
cassette covers of 'Musafir' do not even reveal the
stars, but rather, the covers are covered with comments
from film music critics. And what about if no one likes
the music? "I'd still publicize it on the cover
of the album. Let the buyer then decide whether or not
to buy the album," Gupta declares.
It appears Gupta has
taken many risks with his upcoming 'Musafir'. Only time
will tell whether this truly unique film will click
with the masses. With a tremendously talented star cast
and production crew, it seems 'Musafir' needs only time
to prove it's potential at the box office.
