A truly mystical love story that is set in the
heart of Banaras. A film about relationships, heritage
and tradition. Shwetambari (Urmilla Matondkar) is the
daughter of rich Brahmin parents (Dimple Kapadia and
Raj Babbar) studying science at the local university
in Banaras. While at university Shwetambari falls in
love with Soham (Ashmit Patel) who teaches music and
is also a protégé of Babaji (Nasseruddin
Shah.) One problem, Soham is a low caste mystic and
when their romance is exposed everything goes out of
control. Tempers are flared as everyone in Banras fly
into a rage.
As traditions would have it and the locals would it
they want the two to split and break off their relationship.
Shwetambari's parents just want what is best for their
daughter and only want her happiness and in order for
this they defy all of the social thoughts and beliefs
and let her pursue what she thinks is best. But as the
powers that be come into play it is destiny and the
dark forces that begin to take control of the situation.
Shwetambari's world is broken, her dreams and aspirations
are all thrown up into the air, she leaves the city
she loves the most in search of the right answers. Now
Shwetambari must look and find within herself just what
really does matter if anything does at all.
As time goes on, Shwetambari becomes wise and knowledgeable,
she know is a world teacher, teaching others about philosophy
and religion. 17 years later though she is faced with
a choice. Her father is dying, should she return back
to Banaras the place that she vowed she would have nothing
to do with ever? Will all the deep dark secrets and
truths from the past all be uprooted once again? It
is up to her to make her choice, but will it be he right
one? Will she ever be able to have a peace of mind?
Said to be a love story of a different kind it will
certainly capture the presence and feel of Banaras.
The music score has been taken care of by Himesh Reshammiya
with both a traditional and contemporary feel to it.
An excellent cast with both young and mature established
actors 'Banaras- A Mystic Love Story' is definitely
one to watch out for.
