Tiger
Woods was born on December 31, 1975 at Long Beach Hospital
in Orange county California. His father, Earl Woods,
and his mother, Kultida Punsawad, were married in 1969.
Tiger's father knew that black children did not get
to play golf because they weren't allowed at the country
clubs, but he was going to change that. Even when Tiger
was still in a high chair, only ten months old, his
father would sit him in the garage for hours. Earl would
hit golf balls into a net for hours at a time while
tiger watched. That is why when Tiger was barely old
enough to stand up he could swing his fathers putter
like a driver. Tiger began playing golf at public courses
before he was four years old. One time he even shot
a 48 on the back nine at the Navy Course in Cypress
at age three. Earl once said, "When most kids are in
those circular walkers, you give them a rattle. He had
a putter."
When
Tiger was 6 years old he made his first birdie on a
91 yard par three. By the time he was seven his father
had him listening to sumbliminal tapes to improve his
mental game. Along with the tapes his father used what
he called phsycological warfare on Tiger. He would cough,
yell, laugh, scream, move, run, jump, or throw something
at Tiger while he was swinging. He would do anything
he could to distract him. Tiger won many tournaments
throughout his childhood, and throughout high school.
Tiger attended college at Stanford University and played
for their golf team. Tiger has won countless golf tournaments
since college and after turning pro he had become an
instant success. |
