Kevin
Costner acquired the love of sports from him father
being a top athelete in baseball, basketball and football.
His father instilled in him to do his best along with
loyalty and friendship, sharing and being fair. Kevin's
mother encouraged him to write poetry and join the school
choir hoping to help with the wall and shyness he had
built around himself from the constant moves to different
schools because of his fathers job. Kevin attended CA
State University at Fullerton on a five year business
studies course at the age of l7. He graduated in l978
with an honours degree in business studies. Unhappy
with his career choice, Kevin knew he wanted to be an
actor. But he did not want to let his father down when
he finished college. A stable "9 to 5" job was what
was expected of him. Costner knew something was not
right in his new life. He could not imagine being tied
down with people telling him what to do. He knew there
was more to life. Drama had always interested him though
there were never any plays in the schools he attended.
But he could look inward and see that there was something,
a drive, a need of being someone completely different
than what was expected of him.
Kevin
could always read people, see the humour in things,
life. He was discontented at 22 years old. Two weeks
into a marketing job which he already hated, Kevin was
on the brink of making the decision to change his course
of life. After only 30 days in his first job in marketing,
he resigned. His wife Cindy was furious never taking
his love for acting seriously. Kevin realized he had
taken a big risk but it was time to take control over
his own destiny. "I guess I took a risk. But I felt
it was a bigger risk not to do what was right in my
mind and my heart. If acting is in your soul, you can't
give it up. Some people are born to it. That's the way
I felt. It was a time of my life when I got rock solid
with what I wanted to do. I never breathed an easier
breath. I relaxed then. Then all I had to do was learn.
I never felt like turning back, ever." This was the
beginning of his career which he went after with a zealousness
no one could stop. It was a hard time for Costner but
Hollywood was where he was meant to come. He would prove
his parents wrong, Cindy, their friends, all the people
who had doubted him. The one's who didn't understand.
But first he had to find a job! |
