David Jude Heyworth Law (born December 29, 1972, in
Lewisham, South London, England) is an English actor.
Life
After minor roles in British television, Law had his
breakthrough with Shopping which also featured his future
wife Sadie Frost. For a time Frost and Law were central
to the so called 'Primrose Hill set' of young British
actors that also included Ewan McGregor.
Law and Frost were wed on September 2, 1997. They have
three children together: son Rafferty (born October
6, 1996), daughter Iris (born October 25, 2000) and
son Rudy (born September 10, 2002). Their divorce became
finalized on October 29, 2003.On November 17, 2004,
Jude Law was named People magazine's sexiest man alive.
The 2004 remake of Alfie was a box-office
flop, only making back about half of its estimated
$60 million budget, and voted one of the worst remakes
of all time by a British film magazine. Some film
critics contended that though Law had been effective
in supporting roles, his acting range was too limited
to carry a film on his own. Other films of his in
2004, such as Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow
and I Heart Huckabees also flopped. Nevertheless,
Law is considered a fine character actor and has turned
in first-rate performances such as Gattaca as a frustrated
Olympic medalist bound by a wheelchair, an ill-fated
lover of Kevin Spacey's in Midnight in the Garden
of Good and Evil, Road to Perdition as a sadistic
hitman, and The Talented Mr Ripley, Law's breakout
role for which he was nominated for best supporting
actor.
Jude Law became engaged to Sienna
Miller, his co-star in the remake of Alfie. On July
18, 2005, Law issued a public apology to his fiancée
for having an affair with his childrens' nanny, Daisy
Wright, in New Orleans. Law was quoted as saying "I
want to publicly apologise to Sienna and our respective
families for the pain that I have caused. There is
no defence for my actions which I sincerely regret
and I ask that you respect our privacy at this very
difficult time".In October 2005 Law and Miller
ended their engagement.
In 2005, Law and his ex-wife Sadie
Frost reached a divorce settlement after nearly two
years of negotiations. Frost will keep the couple's
$4 million London house in Primrose Hill, and receive
payments from Law totalling $2 million.
In August 2005, Law was photographed
nude while attempting to put on his bathing suit at
his mother's home in Vaudelnay, France, and the pictures
instantly began circulating on the internet.
Law is a fan of the seminal graphic
novel Watchmen, by Alan Moore, so much so he has a
tattoo of the Rorschach character. He has maintained
an interest in being involved in a feature film production
of the series. He found out about a recent production
by chance through an interview where he was told Darren
Aronofsky, director of Requiem for a Dream was directing
a feature film production of Watchmen, to which he
responded "Darren Aronofsky?! Watchmen?! I'm
there." He has said that he would most likely
play the character Ozymandias.
