Hema
Malini (born 16 October 1948) is an Indian actress and
Bharatanatyam dancer, who starred in several successful
Hindi films in the 1970s, most notably the super-hit,
Sholay. Her fans called her "The Dream Girl of
Bollywood". Debuting in the 1968 film "Sapnon
ka Saudagar" as a young teen opposite the ageing
superstar Raj Kapoor, she soon took the No.1 spot and
held it for nearly the whole decade of the 70s. She
had filmmakers writing scripts specially for her.
While she is dismissed as a dancer and glamourous star,
her performances in films like "Lal Patthar",
"Seeta aur Geeta", "Sholay", "Meera"
and "Satte pe Satta" have been critically
acclaimed. Her comic timing and legendary beauty were
the hallmarks of her performances.
After a long and controversial affair,
she married the much-married actor Dharmendra in 1980.
The marriage produced two children Esha Deol (b. 1982)
and Ahana Deol.
She is a member of the Rajya Sabha
of the BJP. She recently make a comeback of sorts
playing opposite superstar Amitabh Bachchan in the
successful film "Baghbaan" and a featured
cameo role (also opposite Bachchan) in the 2004 blockbuster
"Veer-Zaara".
