Salman
Khan( Urdu, Devanagari), born December 27, 1965, is
a Bollywood movie star. He rose to fame with the hit
film Maine Pyar Kiya and followed up with megahits Andaz
Apna Apna, Hum Aapke Hain Koun, and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.
Salman was born in Indore, Madhya
Pradesh, into a family with strong ties to the film
industry. His father Salim Khan is a successful screenplay
writer. One of Salim Khan's wives (he has two) is
the famous dancer Helen. Salman's brothers Sohail
Khan and Arbaaz Khan are also actors, if not as successful
as Salman. Salman has has two younger sisters, one
married to actor Atul Agnihotri.
Salman has been in the news for some
controversial reasons:
He was charged with hunting an endangered
species, the Blackbuck.
He was arrested for drunk driving and vehicular homicide.
He lost control of his car and killed three people
who had been sleeping on a Mumbai sidewalk.
The media had a field day with his romantic misadventures
(a rocky romance with actress Aishwarya Rai, now ended).
The latest flap is the release of transcript of what
is claimed to be a taped mobile phone conversation
between Salman and Aishwarya. Khan was allegedly trying
to force Aishwarya to appear at several events sponsored
by the Mumbai underworld, threatening her and boasting
of his connections to organized crime.
Despite being considered as Bollywood's "badboy",
many people swear by his friendship and benevolent
nature. He is often involved in charitable causes
and is said to be a frequent visitor to old-age homes
and cancer hospitals. He is also very strongly devoted
to his friends and family.
None of Salman's latest films has
been as successful as his earlier hits, but he is
still considered one of the top actors in Bollywood.
People still say that the industry is ruled by the
so-called "three Khans" (Shahrukh Khan,
Aamir Khan, and Salman Khan).
